Classic Clothes and Classic People Never Go Out of Style
This timeless, colorful book shows famous people as they travel around the world making their living. The tales of travelers from author Ernest Hemingway, politicians Teddy Roosevelt & General MacArthur, movie stars, Harrison Ford, Katharine Hepburn and James Dean to Icons Charles Lindbergh, "The Lone Eagle" and Amelia Earhart, the Banana Republic was there. Nostalgia at it's best, with copy and pictures from all aspects of travel. From Sun Valley to "The Snows of Kilimanjaro," from Key West to Rick's Cafe Americain in Casablanca, the book and clothes are timeless. A travel journal that takes you to places you have only dreamed about. This book takes you around the world with the famous and shows you how to dress for each destination. A great book to add to your library.

It's weird but good
This book was a catalog of clothing sold back in the 80's during the "Indiana Jones" rage. The store's owners were journalists who found clothes that would travel, and then romanticized the clothing in drawings and stories. Part of the fun is discovering these clothes in thrift stores today.

Bawdy Language

A Surprising Find
I opened this book somewhat reluctantly because of my presumed feminine "delicacy," but my interest was so quickly engaged that I simply had to read every page.

The subtitle is apt - not only is it about everything I was afraid to say, it's about things I didn't even know I could say, and I'm no innocent! Who knew this subject could be encyclopedic in scope - it's quite a scholarly work.

It's written so wittily and gracefully that I didn't utter a single squeamish "eeeww." The subject is rendered fit for polite conversation - an amazing feat. It's full of great puns and superb turns of phrase. The illustrations are classic and though naughty, quite artistic, Aubrey Beardsley's being my favorite. The sidebar quotes are wonderful finds from people modern and classical.

All in all, my reaction was Wow! This should be a hot seller!

Tons of great stuff here!
The first thing to mention about *Bawdy Language* is the massive amount of information Paros has brought together. I've been a fan of both language studies and erotica for years, and every page has at least a few tidbits about erotic language, history or folklore that are new to me.

*Bawdy Language* is a reference book in format, but jazzed up with a lot amusing marginalia (song lyrics; literary quotations) and jokey subtitles ("Itching For It;" "Any Number Can Play.") Too much contemporary writing on language, to me, has an irritatingly naive, gee-whiz quality. This book-- despite the joking and a plethora of puns-- is nothing like that. Even where the background of a word, for instance, is somewhat familiar, Paros makes it meaty with dates and exact references.

This book would be a terrific resource for a sex writer-- or, I suppose, for someone preparing for an X-rated game of Jeopardy. For the average reader, *Bawdy Language* will be great fun to have around and dip into, a chapter or a section at a time. Whether you want to look up a survey of words (literary, euphemistic, slang) for a strategic body part, or find out how prostitutes in ancient Athens advertised (with nails on the soles of their shoes arranged to spell out "follow me" in their footprints) you'll find it set out concisely and non-judgmentally. You may well find things that shock you, but that's part of the strength of the book. Although Paros presents the information very artfully, he doesn't censor or apologize for it. He lets you have it (so to speak) without a lot of delicate mediation.

Beluga: A Farewell to Whales
Published in Hardcover by The Lyons Press (April, 1996)
Author: Pierre Beland
Average review score:

a must for whale lovers
"Beluga: A Farewell to Whales" is definitely one book I wish the title for was not so apt. In this work Pierre Beland does an amazing job in bringing to life a remarkable animal, the beluga whale, and in particular one population of this species, those that inhabit the immense St. Lawrence estuary in Canada. He also brings to life in a sad and sometimes sickening way the plight facing these animals, cetaceans that even though legally protected in the St. Lawrence since 1979 do not seem to be showing any signs of signifcant population increase.

Beland's book in part reads like the current popular medical and forensic autopsy shows, as the author, a dedicated and highly trained biologist, seeks to determine what is killing the whales of the St. Lawrence. Ready at a moment's notice - even on holidays, the dead of winter, or in the middle of the night - to retrieve whale corpses found ashore or adrift, Beland and his colleagues probe each whale carcass for the secrets of its life and its death. With dedication and skill worthy of a criminal forensic team they uncover the truth of each whale's demise, which are often untimely as young whales or even newborns are almost as common in his lab as much more mature adults.

What Beland finds is chilling. The whales appear to be dying from pollution, a case he boldy and definitely makes in this book. Examintion of the tissues from the deceased whales reveal staggering amounts of industrial and agricultural chemcials, including polychlorobiphenyls or PCBs, DDT, dieldrin, mirex, chloradane, and more. Even though some of these chemicals haven't been used in the region for decades, their use banned, they continue to wash into the St. Lawrence, a vast river system that drains almost the whole of the Great Lakes region. Beland writes that beluga whale milk in the estuary has been found to contain as much as ten parts per million of PCBs and six parts per million of DDT; a lot considering fish containing fives times fewer PCBs are considered unfit for human consumption. Ships carrying waste with more than fifty milligrams of PCBs per kilogram (or fifty parts per million) require a special transit permit; sadly, the average male beluga roaming these waters already has that concentration of PCBs in his blubber by age nine. Without suprise, this massive concentration of pollution within the whale's bodies has lead to a host of ailments. St. Lawrence belugas boast the dubious honor of the highest incidence of cancer in any marine mammal, perhaps even a higher rate than that found in man. Beland discusses not only the cancer but also the other health problems that are affecting this population of whale's very survival.

Beland clearly is in love with the beluga, a beautiful white whale that he writes wears that "peculiar beluga smile," a feature that gives the species "the look of an enigmatic wise man or, rather, of a happy imbelice." Remarkable animals, the author spends a great deal of time discusses the biology and behavior of belugas, particularly in a very concise and fact-filled appendix. Among the most vocal of all whale species, their repertoire is more varied than that of dolphins and extremely complex. Highly social creatures, they may surpass dolphins in their potential for social communication. They also according to Beland clearly surpass dolphins in terms of their echolocation capability; in fact this ability is so sophisticated that the belugas have been held for many years by both the United States and the former Soviet Union for studies to aid in the development of sonar technology. Beland discusses this at some length, including the remarkable story of a beluga that escaped from such a facility in the Ukraine and ended up in of all places the Turkish coast, very far indeed from the species usual haunts.

The book is also valuable for its history of the interaction between the beluga whales and the people of the St. Lawrence. Hunted for centuries - from the days of the earliest European settlers and by native peoples before that - Beland discusses the use of weir fisheries to trap whales and of the odd, bizarre, and cruel war fought against the beluga between 1928 and 1939 which even involved bombing the poor whales from the air! Also discussed is the history of the beluga in captivity, covering everything from the early futile attempts involving the likes of P.T. Barnum to today's more sophisiticated modern oceanairums, which although Beland has some misgivings about them, may play a vital role in trying to save the species.

Finally the book is a good one to get for those interested in the St. Lawrence estuary itself, an impressive body of water and ecosystem in its own right. As much a sea as a river, the St. Lawrence flows downstream only half the time, it main current reversed every six hours by the tide in a never ending war between the light brown river waters flowing from the Great Lakes and the green salt water alive with seaweed and all matter of marine animals. Home to a variety of seabirds, fishes, crustaceans, molluscs, and four species of seals - many of which are more charaterstic of arctic climates and are not found as far south anywhere else in the world - even without belugas the river and its life are remarkable and need protection.

Beluga-A Farwell to Whales
A charming, heartfelt book concerning a species not often written about. The sad toll the animal's own environment takes on it's health, and the dawning inevitability of the whale population's demise is shocking. The novel made me not only want to find out more, but it woke me up and made me want desperately to help.

Better in the Poconos: The Story of Pennsylvania's Vacation Land
Published in Hardcover by Pennsylvania State Univ Pr (Trd) (March, 2002)
Author: Lawrence Louis Squeri
Average review score:

Connects Pocono history to larger trends
Lawrence Squeri has written a book that is educational and enjoyable on many levels. As a former resident of the Pocono area, I found the local history fascinating, especially considering the paucity of other worthy books on this subject. It also works on a larger scale since Squeri ties in the history of recreation in this area with the changes in the country at large at the same time. In this way, Better In the Poconos serves as a case study for the nation as a whole instead of just a small-niche local interest book.

An original slice of regional American history
Better In The Poconos: The Story Of Pennsylvania's Vacationland by Lawrence Squeri (Professor of History, East Stroudsburg University) is an original slice of regional American history, offering the reader an inside look behind the glamour of the tourist industry. Focusing specifically on the tourism trade in the Poconos area of Pennsylvania, from the opening of the first hotel in 1829, to the many industries who ruthlessly compete for tourist dollars today, Better In The Poconos is an amazing story of clashing economics, evolving trades, and more, highlighted with black-and-white photographs from a variety of eras in history. Better In The Poconos is very highly recommended for academic and community library American Popular Culture and American History supplemental reading lists and reference collections.

Bluebird: How You Can Help Its Fight for Survival
Published in Paperback by Indiana University Press (July, 1978)
Author: Lawrence Zeleny
Average review score:

very informative
very easy to read book. gives a lot of understanding of why the bluebird needs help.

Great reference book for bluebird watchers.
This is the first and foremost book on bluebirds that I know of. It has been my reference for building a bluebird box, watching the adults build a nest, laying eggs, young birds hatching and finally looking in the box and finding only an empty nest. We have 3 boxes on our acre of land with at least 5-10 young birds being hatched each year. Mr. Zeleny's book is a wealth of knowledge for anyone wanting to help save the bluebird.

Blueprint for Marketing: Comprehensive Marketing Guide for Design Professionals

Blueprint for Success!
I, too, am the proud owner of a very dog-eared copy of "Blueprint for Marketing". When I was new to the A/E/C industry a friend recommended that I read this book. After returning a borrowed library copy, I immediately bought a new copy of my own and have referenced it innumerable times since then. Recently I had the pleasure of meeting the author, Susan Frost, and I was thrilled to be able to tell her how much use we'd gotten out of her book. It has helped me to teach others in my firm about some of the tenants of marketing services to our industry. We have also been able to adapt her practical advice to develop successful solutions for our business development strategies and specific marketing issues.

Easy to digest, practical and specific to our industry, I'm so glad I found this book. I'd highly recommend it.

Blueprint for Marketing
I own a small business. We have used this book so much it is dogearred! It is simple, easy to follow and gives some excellent tips on marketing a small business! It outlines how to put a marketing plan together. I have not found a better book or approach to preparing a marketing plan! It gave us a lot of sources and paths to take in order to market our business! I recommend highly to someone just starting out or wanting to readjust your approach to marketing to todays marketplace! It applies to any business and gives great general examples and some really fresh information!

The Book of Words (Sefer Shel Devarim): Talking Spiritual Life, Living Spiritual Talk
Published in Paperback by Random House (November, 1998)
Author: Lawrence Kushner
Average review score:

A Rare Book - that may Change your Life!
After being on my shelf to read for months, I found a need when I audited Nancy DeClaisse-Wolford's class in Old Testament at Mercer-McAfee. She guided our class thru the Hebrew Words in using them to parallel the Ugaritic texts! Needless to say, as a poor linguistic student at 70 yr. I was in too deep! But I did gain new interest in learning Hebrew aleph-beit. I also became caught up in Rabbi Kushner's "Book of Words and Book of Letters."

The Hebrew words meaning most to me are, b'rahkah or blessing; hit-la-ha-voot or Ecstasy. Kushner stated: "There can be joy in silence or with tears...in their occasions joyous laughter turns out to be sacred." The word ecstasy also appears in Leonard Bernstein's Chichester Psalms, coming at a most dramatic moment!

The word for prayer has meant much: t'fee-lah as the Rabbi uses the phonetic spelling. In his last page for each word he writes a Kavanah or Living Spiritual Talk: "In prayer you need to know a 'script' so well that you can recite the words on 'auto-pilot' but not so well that the words are habitual."

In the beginning for each word there are cogent, potent words of description. On n'shah-mah or Soul: "You are (like everyone else ...not crazy) a barely coherent hodgepodge of contradictory thoughts, feelings and deeds! What keeps you 'together' is an imaginary center called a 'self.'" Of course he sprinkles along a few closely related verses of Scripture.

After this "Book of Words," I passed onto "Book of Letters," and next, "God was in this Place and I, i did not know." Again, it was Awesome! A Mystery. What a forcefully creative writer! Retired Chap. Fred W Hood

A Small Book With Enormous Impact!
I thought I understood the meaning of the words presented here, but Kushner's definitions really startled me, challenged me, and engaged me! His unconventional definitions brought new light to so many words I thought I understood, and all too often took for granted. He poignantly demonstrates how words, and the way we define and understand them, affect more than our vocabulary! This is a small book, but it is far from a 'quick read' because its words will enter your thoughts over and over, often when you least expect it, each time offering a new insight, each time helping you understand how the very words we use--and the way we define them--affect our lives and the lives of those around us. It is a book whose 'words' continue to influence long after you close its cover, a book for which I greatly thank the author.
